DISCOVER LACHUNG
Why Travellers Love Lachung
Tucked at around 2,700 metres where the Lachung Chu river carves through North Sikkim, Lachung is a picture-book mountain village of wooden houses, apple orchards, waterfalls and a hillside monastery — all ringed by snow peaks. For most travellers it is the cosy overnight base for one of the Himalaya’s most beautiful day trips: the drive up to the Yumthang Valley, famously called the Valley of Flowers.
In spring the slopes above Lachung erupt with rhododendrons in dozens of shades, while Yumthang’s meadows, hot spring and river make a stunning alpine picnic. Push higher and the road climbs to Zero Point (Yumesamdong) at roughly 15,300 ft, where the motorable road ends amid snow and raw high-Himalaya scenery — an unforgettable, weather-permitting highlight.
Lachung pairs naturally with Lachung’s twin, Lachen, to form the classic North Sikkim circuit, usually started from Gangtok on a permitted, registered trip. It suits couples, families and nature lovers who want deep mountain beauty with a warm village stay — as long as you plan for altitude, changeable weather and the permits this protected region requires.
PLEASE READ
Permits & High-Altitude Travel
Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point sit in a restricted, high-altitude border region — not ordinary sightseeing stops. Here’s what every traveller should know before planning.
- Protected Area Permit required: Lachung and Yumthang fall in a restricted zone. Indian travellers need a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered local operator with valid photo ID and photos — we handle this for you.
- Foreign nationals: access to parts of North Sikkim is restricted for foreign passport holders and rules change, so please confirm current eligibility with us before booking.
- High altitude: Yumthang is around 11,800 ft and Zero Point about 15,300 ft. Acclimatise, move slowly, stay hydrated, and consult your doctor beforehand if you have any health concerns about altitude.
- Zero Point is never guaranteed: snow, weather, road and check-post conditions can close Zero Point (and sometimes Yumthang) at short notice, occasionally on the day itself.
- Registered guided travel only: North Sikkim is not for self-drive trips; travel is by registered operator vehicles with permits, usually starting from Gangtok.

WHEN TO GO
Best Time to Visit Lachung
- March–May (spring): the signature season — rhododendrons and wildflowers carpet Yumthang and the sanctuary, with pleasant days.
- June–September (monsoon): lush but landslide-prone; North Sikkim roads can close, so this season carries higher risk.
- October–December (autumn–early winter): crisp, clear skies with fresh snow up high — great for Zero Point scenery.
- January–February (deep winter): very cold with heavy snow that can block roads and Zero Point; some stays may be limited.
These are general seasonal patterns, not guarantees — North Sikkim weather changes quickly and can close roads or high points, so always check current conditions before you travel.

- By Air: the nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), near Siliguri, connected to Kolkata, Delhi and other cities. From there you reach Gangtok, then travel north.
- By Train: the nearest major railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri; from there reach Gangtok by road, then continue to Lachung.

- Permits & guided travel: Lachung is a protected area — travel is arranged through a registered operator with permits; self-drive is not permitted.
We don’t quote fixed drive times — North Sikkim roads vary day to day and can be affected by weather. Keep generous buffer time, especially for onward flights or trains.

- Keep valid government photo ID and passport-size photos ready for permits.
- Carry personal medicines and consult your doctor beforehand if you have altitude concerns.
- Treat Zero Point and Yumthang as weather-dependent — keep plans flexible.
- Carry enough cash — ATMs and card acceptance are very limited in North Sikkim.
- Expect patchy mobile network and electricity — carry power banks.
- Respect the monastery, local culture and the fragile alpine environment; avoid littering.
- Book early in peak season — permits, limited rooms and vehicles fill up fast.
