Why Travellers Love Lachung

Tucked at around 2,700 metres where the Lachung Chu river carves through North Sikkim, Lachung is a picture-book mountain village of wooden houses, apple orchards, waterfalls and a hillside monastery — all ringed by snow peaks. For most travellers it is the cosy overnight base for one of the Himalaya’s most beautiful day trips: the drive up to the Yumthang Valley, famously called the Valley of Flowers.

In spring the slopes above Lachung erupt with rhododendrons in dozens of shades, while Yumthang’s meadows, hot spring and river make a stunning alpine picnic. Push higher and the road climbs to Zero Point (Yumesamdong) at roughly 15,300 ft, where the motorable road ends amid snow and raw high-Himalaya scenery — an unforgettable, weather-permitting highlight.

Lachung pairs naturally with Lachung’s twin, Lachen, to form the classic North Sikkim circuit, usually started from Gangtok on a permitted, registered trip. It suits couples, families and nature lovers who want deep mountain beauty with a warm village stay — as long as you plan for altitude, changeable weather and the permits this protected region requires.

GOOD TO KNOW

Lachung Travel FAQs

Lachung is usually one night (2 days / 1 night) for Yumthang and Zero Point. Combined with Lachen it’s a 2–3 night North Sikkim circuit; with Gangtok, plan around 5–6 days.
Yes. Lachung and Yumthang are in a protected area. Indian travellers need a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered operator with valid ID and photos — we handle this. Self-drive is not permitted.
Access to parts of North Sikkim is restricted for foreign passport holders and rules change. Please confirm your current eligibility with us before booking so we can plan realistically.
No. Zero Point sits at roughly 15,300 ft and snow, weather and road conditions can close it (and sometimes Yumthang) at short notice. It also usually carries an extra charge. We keep plans flexible, but access can’t be guaranteed.
March–May is ideal for the Yumthang rhododendrons and flowers; October–December brings clear skies and snow. Monsoon (June–September) is landslide-prone, and deep winter can block roads.
Yumthang is around 11,800 ft and Zero Point about 15,300 ft, so altitude is a genuine consideration. Acclimatise, move slowly, stay hydrated, and consult your doctor beforehand if you have concerns.
Fly to Bagdogra (IXB) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), reach Gangtok, then travel north to Lachung on a permitted, registered North Sikkim trip. We arrange the full circuit.
Simple and cosy — homestays, guesthouses and a few standard hotels. Expect warmth, hot food and basic comfort rather than luxury, and book early in season.
Both are limited and can be patchy. Carry power banks, download what you need in advance, and let family know you may be offline during the North Sikkim leg.
It can be, with care, but the altitude and long mountain drives are demanding. We’re happy to advise on pacing and suitability for your group.
Heavy woollens, a windproof jacket, gloves, cap, sturdy shoes, personal medicines, valid ID with photos, cash, power banks and any specific items you need.
As early as possible for peak season — permits, limited rooms and preferred vehicles all get booked up, and early planning makes for a smoother trip.
